Escorts and travel restrictions

Escort & pilot car rules

  • ADOT determines escort needs case-by-case based on roadway surface, grade, width, and height rather than one universal published table.
  • A front escort is required if the front load projection exceeds 20'; a rear escort is required if the rear projection exceeds 20'.
  • A police escort is required where specified on ADOT's route Table 4 or as ADOT deems necessary; Arizona DPS must be notified at least 12 hours before transport.
  • Loads exceeding 16' in height require advance height notification to ADOT.

When you can travel

  • Continuous (24-hour) travel is allowed for certain configurations, e.g. Class A cranes no more than 11' wide, 14'6" high, with front/rear overhangs of 10' or less.
  • Metropolitan-area curfew restrictions apply per R17-6-404; specific hours vary by route/area.
  • No statewide blanket daylight-only or weekend/holiday travel ban; restrictions are largely route- and permit-specific.

Signs, flags and lights

Most states require

  • An “OVERSIZE LOAD” banner on the front of the truck and the rear of the load.
  • Red or fluorescent orange warning flags at each corner and at the widest points of the load.
  • Amber warning lights or clearance lights when moving at night, where night travel is allowed.

Arizona specifics

  • Banner size, flag size and light rules for Arizona are listed on your permit.
  • We include them in your permit notes so your driver has them before the trip.

Rules change. Limits and requirements are set by ADOT and can change. We confirm the current rules for your exact load before filing.
