Loads over 16' wide/high, or over 150,001 lbs GVW, are classified Superload (or Superload Plus above 180,000 lbs) and require individual route survey/escort handling.

Escorts and travel restrictions

Escort & pilot car rules

  • Rear escort with amber light required for loads 75'-100' long, or 12'-14'8" wide on four-lane/limited-access roads.
  • Front escort with height-sensor pole required for any load 15'6" or taller.
  • Front AND rear escorts required for loads over 125' long, or over 16' wide.
  • Police escort required for loads exceeding 16' wide.

When you can travel

  • Standard travel hours: Monday-Saturday, 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset.
  • Continuous (24/7) movement allowed for permitted loads of 125,000 lbs or less with legal dimensions.
  • House moves restricted to Monday-Saturday 9am-3pm.
  • Permits invalid on I-285 (Atlanta) 7-9am and 3-6pm Monday-Friday.

Signs, flags and lights

Most states require

  • An “OVERSIZE LOAD” banner on the front of the truck and the rear of the load.
  • Red or fluorescent orange warning flags at each corner and at the widest points of the load.
  • Amber warning lights or clearance lights when moving at night, where night travel is allowed.
