Escorts and travel restrictions
Escort & pilot car rules
- Width 12 ft to 14.5 ft: one escort required.
- Width exceeding 14.5 ft: two escorts required.
- Length exceeding 90 ft: two escorts required.
When you can travel
- Permit travel authorized only Monday through Friday during approved hours — no weekend travel.
- Most vehicles restricted to 30 minutes before sunrise through 30 minutes after sunset.
Signs, flags and lights
Most states require
- An “OVERSIZE LOAD” banner on the front of the truck and the rear of the load.
- Red or fluorescent orange warning flags at each corner and at the widest points of the load.
- Amber warning lights or clearance lights when moving at night, where night travel is allowed.
