Escort & pilot car rules
- Daylight, two-lane roads: loads 13'+ wide require at minimum a front escort.
- Night movement: 10'+ wide on two-lane roads requires a front escort.
- Super Loads 160'+ long require two blue-light escorts; loads 15'7"+ tall require two blue-light escorts plus a height-pole escort.
When you can travel
- Daylight-only travel required for loads over 12' wide.
- Night movement allowed only for loads ≤12' wide, ≤150,000 lbs, ≤99' long, ≤13'6" high.
- Holiday ban: no movement after noon the day before, or on, major federal holidays.
Signs, flags and lights
Most states require
- An “OVERSIZE LOAD” banner on the front of the truck and the rear of the load.
- Red or fluorescent orange warning flags at each corner and at the widest points of the load.
- Amber warning lights or clearance lights when moving at night, where night travel is allowed.
