Escorts and travel restrictions

Escort & pilot car rules

  • Width 12 ft to 14.5 ft: one escort required.
  • Width exceeding 14.5 ft: two escorts required.
  • Length exceeding 90 ft: two escorts required.

When you can travel

  • Permit travel authorized only Monday through Friday during approved hours — no weekend travel.
  • Most vehicles restricted to 30 minutes before sunrise through 30 minutes after sunset.

Signs, flags and lights

Most states require

  • An “OVERSIZE LOAD” banner on the front of the truck and the rear of the load.
  • Red or fluorescent orange warning flags at each corner and at the widest points of the load.
  • Amber warning lights or clearance lights when moving at night, where night travel is allowed.
